August Jean Jacques Hervieu, c1794-1880, had been commissioned to supply plates for this edition, but they were not included. Trollope inserts the following note at the end of the Table of Contents: ‘The Sketches by Mr. Hervieu, so frequently alluded to in the following pages, were intended to accompany this publication; but the expenses of engraving them in the style they deserved was found so great, that the idea was abandoned’ (viii).
