  2. Preface to John Evans, The Juvenile Tourist, 3rd edn. (1809), states that Gardiner's book plagiarizes his. Gardiner, for her part, signs her dedication as 'The Editor', but a sample of her opening narration on Kent does demonstrate a reliance on Evans without acknowledgment. Her technique is to expand upon Evans's narration, sometimes by apportioning his words between her own narration and the set speeches uttered by 'companions' (e.g. Mr A. and his daughter Adelina). Another unacknowledged source is Robert Goady's A New Display of the Beauties of England (3rd edn 1776), and there are no doubt others.
