  2. Based on Broughton’s mother’s diaries while resident in Algiers (1806-1812) as wife to Consul General, Henry Stanyford Blanckley (d. 1828); Broughton sets her mother's diary entries in quotation marks and interleaves reminiscences of her own childhood in Algiers.
