Dedicated to ‘Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent’ [Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, duchess of Kent (1786–1861; ODNB), mother of Queen Victoria] .
-
Based on Broughton’s mother’s diaries while resident in Algiers (1806-1812) as wife to Consul General, Henry Stanyford Blanckley (d. 1828); Broughton sets her mother's diary entries in quotation marks and interleaves reminiscences of her own childhood in Algiers.
