Elizabeth Frances Batty

Batty, Elizabeth Frances, later Martineau, 1791—1875

by Benjamin Colbert

Daughter of physician and amateur artist Robert Batty (ODNB: 1762/3-1849), to whom Italian Scenery is dedicated, and sister to army officer and artist Robert Batty (ODNB: 1788/9-1848), Elizabeth Frances Batty shared with these family members artistic talents and became known as a water colourist.

Not long after publishing Italian Scenery, she married Philip Martineau (1791-1860), Taxing Master to the Court of Chancery. A son from this marriage, Robert Braithwaite Martineau (ODNB; 1826-1829), became associated with the Pre-Raphaelite painters after studying under Holman Hunt.
